red is often accociated with love. a fern is a plant (more specifically a tree) which takes quite a while to come to it's full life and bloom and whatnot. "where the red fern grows" would, therefore, mean "where the love will develope more strongly due to the ammount of time spent developing to it's fullest." either that, or it's just a phrase that Tony T. created because he felt like it.
